Google expects a manufacturer barcode for this category. Never invent one; here is how to find and fill it.
A GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) is the manufacturer-issued barcode standard behind UPC, EAN, and ISBN codes. Google suspects your product belongs to a category where GTINs normally exist, and your feed does not include one. Google shows this as Missing value [gtin], sometimes as a "limited performance" warning rather than an outright disapproval, but either way the product will not compete as well in Shopping results without it.
On Shopify, the Google & YouTube sales channel reads the variant's Barcode field to populate gtin. This is missing or unusable when:
identifier_exists as false for that category instead of leaving the field silently blank.Feed Doctor's rule engine validates the barcode already stored on the Shopify variant using the real GTIN checksum (accepting GTIN-8, UPC-A/12, EAN-13, and GTIN-14 lengths). If that barcode is a valid GTIN, Feed Doctor fills the gtin field from it automatically. If the barcode is missing, or present but fails the checksum, Feed Doctor does not guess or invent a replacement value. Instead it flags the product so you can source and enter the correct GTIN yourself, which is exactly the outcome Google's own guidance asks for.
No, and it will not try. A made-up number almost always fails Google's checksum or points to someone else's product. Feed Doctor only fills the gtin field when the Shopify barcode already on the variant is a real, valid GTIN.
That number is likely not a checksum-valid GTIN, for example an internal SKU. Feed Doctor checks the same digit-check Google uses and will flag the product for review instead of submitting a barcode that will just fail again.
Some private-label or custom products are legitimately exempt. Google allows submitting identifier_exists as false for those instead of leaving GTIN empty. Check Google's current Merchant Center Help page for the exact requirement in your category before doing this.
No. Google only expects one in categories where GTINs normally exist, mainly branded, mass-produced goods. Handmade or exclusive items in categories without standard barcodes are usually exempt.
